About the Artist

Magdalena Castro

Magdalena Castro’s journey is a real-life story of art intersecting with science to formulate originality.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Magdalena Castro was captivated by fine art at an early age, particularly after attending Martha Traba’s art seminars at Los Andes University. Putting her passion for art on hold, Magdalena’s unending curiosity and tireless work ethic led her to the sciences. Magdalena graduated from medical school and later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she completed her residency from esteemed Northwestern University. After retiring early from the medical profession and subsequently acquiring a Masters Degree in Liberal Studies from Lake Forest College, Dr. Castro has dedicated her time and talents to producing a distinct collection of oil paintings and sculptures.

Dr. Castro’s works were most recently exhibited at the Deerpath Art Gallery and she has experience painting with Doris Volpe of Lake Forest, Illinois and Eladio Gonzalez, a well-known Cuban artist and sculptor. There are no recognizable forms in the majority of Dr. Castro’s work and so there exists the possibility of multi-faceted interpretations.

Influenced by the works of Alejandro Obregon, Dr. Castro has exhibited at numerous events, notably:

• Chicago’s “Viva la Hispanidad” as an artist representing her native country of Colombia, South America

• Sueños y Espejos’ exhibit in Aurora, Illinois, as a participant artist at the "public art commission" of Latin American artists

• Chicago’s “Viva La Hispanidad” as a curator

After moving to Naples, Florida four years ago, Dr. Castro has been inspired by the sights and sounds of the natural world and her fascination for the clarity of colors – as depicted in her abstract oil paintings.

Dr. Castro is planning on doing a presentation of her latest works in Naples in January 2022.
